Dodgers Could Address Age Concerns With 2 Internal Options

The Los Angeles Dodgers have dominated MLB in the 2020s and have been the kings of the NL West since the 2010s, but the average age of their current roster — 28.8 years old — has caused some concern during the offseason.

The Dodgers’ roster has the third-highest average age in MLB, ranking only behind the San Diego Padres (29.1) and New York Mets (28.8). While they’re not quite the oldest team in MLB, their position player group is currently the oldest in the major leagues.

ESPN’s Bradford Doolittle believes the Dodgers already have a solution to their age-related issues within their organizations, and they both made their MLB debuts in 2025.

“As it stands, L.A. projects to have the No. 2 offense and the top pitching staff, both in the rotation and the bullpen,” Doolittle wrote. “The Dodgers also have the oldest position player group in the majors and could stand to mix in a little youth and athleticism. Both would be accomplished if Alex Freeland and Hyeseong Kim are ready to seize larger roles.”

The Dodgers drafted Freeland in 2022, and he finally got his shot at the top level this past season. With third baseman Max Muncy on the injured list and second baseman Tommy Edman struggling with his ankle, the Dodgers called up Freeland at the end of July.

He played 29 games during his stay in MLB, slashing .190/.292/.310 with two home runs and six RBIs through 84 at-bats. Though his numbers weren’t exactly impressive overall, he showed he could hang in the majors towards the beginning of his time in LA. He batted .353 through his first five games, and had an OPS just short of .800 during that time.

Kim also had a great start to his MLB career, joining the Dodgers at the beginning of May 2025 from Triple-A. Through May, Kim had a .422 batting average with a 1.058 OPS during that time.

If both players can rediscover the form they had at the beginning of their MLB careers, they could very well carve out a significant role for themselves on the Dodgers roster and assist them in winning their third consecutive championship.

Doolittle also considered other options when talking about the Dodgers’ age, though, and brought up the potential of signing All-Star free agent Kyle Tucker to fix the problem.

“Of course, they would also get a little younger and more athletic if they signed Kyle Tucker and found a taker for Teoscar Hernandez,” Doolittle wrote.

The Dodgers have plenty of options at their disposal, and with just a month remaining before the start of spring training, they’ll need to make their decision soon.
