Dodgers Designate Michael Peterson For Assignment, Activate Well-Traveled Left-Hander

The Dodgers announced a swap of relief pitchers prior to Sunday’s series finale against the Cleveland Guardians. Right-hander Michael Peterson was designated for assignment while left-hander Nick Ramirez was promoted from Triple-A Oklahoma City for the sixth time this season.

Teams are limited to optioning players to the minors five times in a calendar year. That was no obstacle for the Dodgers and Ramirez, who designated for assigment on July 30, outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 2, and now returns as the Dodgers will add him to their 40-man and 28-man rosters for Sunday’s game.

In order to clear the 40-man roster spot, Peterson was DFA’d for the first time since the Dodgers selected his contract in June.

The Dodgers also optioned left-hander Justin Wrobleski to Triple-A on Sunday.

The Dodgers were able to bring Ramirez back because they previously outrighted him after his fifth optional assignment. Their only penalty, in effect, is that Peterson must now be traded, placed on outright assignment to the minors, or placed on waivers over the next seven days.

In 11 major league games with the Dodgers this year, the native of Great Britain was 3-0 with a 6.43 ERA. He appeared most recently in the Dodgers’ Sept. 4 loss to the Angels, allowing four hits and three runs in one inning, walking one batter.

Signed as a minor league free agent in January, Peterson made his major league debut with Los Angeles in June. He had a 1.17 ERA in 7.2 innings across his first five major league appearances, but was touched for four runs — three on a Christian Walker homer — in a July 3 game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Dodgers acquired Ramirez from the New York Yankees for cash on April 2. His myriad of back-and-forth trips to Oklahoma City have yielded just seven appearances spanning 11.1 innings. He’s allowed eight runs in that time, allowing opponents to hit .311 against him.

As noted by Eric Stephen of SB Nation on Twitter/X, Ramirez is nothing if not rested:

Wrobleski, 24, threw two scoreless innings in the Dodgers’ 7-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday. He is 1-2 with a 6.40 ERA in seven appearances this season; nearly half of those runs were allowed in a Sept. 1 spot start against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who touched the rookie left-hander for 10 runs in 5.1 innings.
