The Los Angeles Dodgers designated right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin for assignment on Thursday amid a major roster move ahead of free agency.

The Dodgers added outfielder Ryan Ward and left-handed pitcher Robinson Ortiz to the 40-man roster and outrighted outfielder Justin Dean and right-handed pitcher Michael Grove.
Gonsolin underwent a Tommy John revision surgery in August, his second major elbow surgery over the last few years. He’s expected to miss most or all of the 2026 season, which is the last year he would be under contract before hitting free agency.

A ninth-round pick by the Dodgers in 2016, Gonsolin burst onto the scene with a 2.93 ERA across 40 innings in 2019, and a 2.31 ERA across 46.2 innings in 2020. He then had a career-year in 2022, going 16-1 with a 2.14 ERA across 130.1 innings, making his first and only All-Star appearance. He was a leading Cy Young candidate before getting hurt late in the year.
The struggles came about for Gonsolin in 2023, as he had a 4.98 ERA across 103 innings before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He missed the entire 2024 season before returning this year, but dealt with a back injury in spring training that forced him to miss the beginning of the season.
Gonsolin ended up making seven appearances this season, sporting a 5.00 ERA across 36 innings before undergoing surgery.
As for the other moves, the Dodgers are protecting Ward and Ortiz from the Rule 5 draft.

Good riddance!
Be nice.
Come on dude. He failed to stay healthy.
Shut up
Mr.Wannabe shut up
Sad to see him go. Wanted to see his full potential but the nagging injuries could mean the end of his career. Wish the Catman well.
May the Cat be with you, Tony G. You will be missed, I think…
I don’t know what they saw or didn’t see or if it was just a business decision, but I think he’s still got a lot of potential. I think it’s shortsighted, but I’m not the one signing the checks.
Unfortunately. With the emphasis on max effort on pretty much every pitch. It’s just a matter of time before the ucl goes. If not the shoulder. Typically 2 of these surgeries and u r done. Fingers crossed for Ohtani. I doubt he will be able to crack 150 innings going forward
