Dodgers Lose 3 Players in Rule 5 Draft

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost three minor leaguers in the Triple-A Phase of the Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday.

The Rule 5 Draft is an annual occurrence at the MLB Winter Meetings where teams can draft players left off of other teams’ 40-man rosters. The Triple-A phase is similar, but adds prospects who have spent at least four years in the minors and are not in Triple-A to Triple-A teams rather than their major league roster.

The Miami Marlins selected right-hander Livan Reinoso with their pick, the Pittsburgh Pirates laid claim to southpaw Brandon Neeck and the Houston Astros selected outfielder Edwin Sanchez.

After going undrafted, Reinoso signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers in 2022. He moved to Single-A after just three games in rookie ball that season, through struggled upon his promotion. He slowly rose through the Dodgers’ ranks, and made 29 appearances with Double-A Tulsa in 2025.

Through those appearances, he had a 4.39 ERA through 41 innings with 36 strikeouts and 39 walks.

The Dodgers drafted Neeck in the ninth round of the 2022 draft, though he didn’t start his professional career until 2023. Like Reinoso, Neeck quickly moved up after a solid showing in the Arizona Complex League, but struggled in his first season.

Neeck settled in in 2024, though, posting a 2.85 ERA through 38 appearances out of the bullpen. He began 2025 with Double-A Tulsa, and posted a 5.40 ERA through 39 games.

Sanchez is the youngest of the trio, aged just 21. All four of his professional seasons have come in the Dominican Summer League, but he has posted fantastic numbers throughout his time in the minors. He has had an OPS north of .900 in both of the last two seasons, and has a .877 OPS through 189 professional games.

While the Dodgers could come to miss some of their now-departed prospects, they still have one of the best farm systems on baseball and will be glad to have kept their more important pieces.
