Dodgers’ Top Pitching Prospect Might Start Against Giants

After dramatically sweeping the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly handing the ball off to a starting pitcher making his major league debut to open the rivalry series against the San Francisco Giants.

Manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Saturday that River Ryan is “a possibility” to start on Monday, according to a social media post from The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.

“He’s in Arizona right now, so he’s looming,” Roberts added. “It potentially could be Monday. We’ll see.”

Ryan’s rise to the big leagues comes within two years of his full-time conversion to pitching. He was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 11th round in 2021 as an infielder. Los Angeles acquired him in a trade for infielder Matt Beaty and moved him to the mound.

The Dodgers’ starting rotation depth is running thin which is why they are turning to Ryan. Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the rest of the rotation for the series will be Landon Knack on Tuesday followed by Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw on Wednesday and Thursday.

Ryan has pitched to a 2.22 ERA and 1.03 WHIP while collecting 32 strikeouts in 24.1 innings pitched across eight starts with Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.
