Dodgers Miss Out on Tanner Scott as Padres Surprisingly Swoop In to Land Him

The Los Angeles Dodgers won’t be getting Tanner Scott — but they will be seeing a lot of him.

Less than two hours before Tuesday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline, the San Diego Padres swooped in and acquired left-handed All-Star closer Scott from the Miami Marlins for a massive haul.

The Padres are giving up left-handed pitcher Robby Snelling, right-handed Adam Mazur, infielder Graham Pauley, and infielder Jay Beshears for Scott and right-handed pitcher Bryan Hoeing.

Scott was an All-Star in 2024 for the first time in his career. The 30-year-old has a 1.18 ERA, 370 ERA+, 3.24 FIP, and a 1.00 WHIP in 44 games and 45.2 innings this season. He’s not only one of the best left-handed relievers in baseball, but he’s one of the best relievers in general.

Scott was linked to the Dodgers leading up to the trade deadline, as well as other top teams in the league, like the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies. However, in the end, it’s the Padres and general manager A.J. Preller who swoop in and land the top reliever on the market.

Scott is set to become a free agent in the offseason. For the rest of this year, though, he will provide San Diego with elite pitching out of the ‘pen.

The Los Angeles Dodgers would’ve greatly benefitted form adding Scott, as they have had bullpen concerns throughout the season. However, the Dodgers were likely not going to match the Padres’ offer, trading three top-10 prospects for a rental reliever.

Scott was originally drafted in 2014 by the Baltimore Orioles and spent his first five seasons in Baltimore before being moved to Miami in April 2022.

Scott will now head to Southern California to fight for the top spot in the NL West.

  1. No aurprise. AJ makes the trades the Dodgers should make. The Dodgers are looking to augement a Lambo w/parts the 99 cents store. Unreal ?

    1. Yeah, AJ made the trade… and bankrupted his prospect capital in the process for a rental, giving up most of his top minor league capital. I am more than happy with the Dodgers get Jack Flaherty, a real need, not a luxury. Scott will not make the Padres any better now or in the future especially when they need those pieces Preller traded away for, as I said, a rental…

  2. In the past, we just used to always call this “Dumpster diving” Friedman. I guess this is what they promised Ohtani , recycled goods to win the WS. while the competition is shopping at Frederick’s of Hollywood……

  3. At 6: 01 Eastern Standard, the 1st media apologists for friedman headlines will read. ” The Haul for starting pitching was just too much for the dodgers” especially after “ALL” the players are coming back. What the Tigers and white Sox were asking was just not sustainable for the future so the Dodgers stayed put. But Dave roberts thinks this team has what it takes to all come together and win a World series. This is my opinion of course, but this is how it goes every year. Is Lance Lynne available?
