Dodgers Named Favorite to Land Edwin Diaz After Mets Signing of Devin Williams

With Devin Williams inking a three-year deal to join the New York Mets, coupled with the recent signings of Raisel Iglesias (Atlanta Braves) and Ryan Helsley (Baltimore Orioles), the once-deep pool of free agent relievers has suddenly began to thin out.

The Los Angeles Dodgers had long been rumored as a potential landing spot for Williams in particular. Now with the All-Star reliever off to Queens, the front office faces a recalibration of sorts as the team sets out to improve what was a very inconsistent bullpen in 2025.

There are still a host of intriguing names out on the open market. Pete Fairbanks, Luke Weaver, Tyler Rogers, Kenley Jansen, Robert Suarez, and Emilio Pagan are a few.

Having said that, the heavyweight name remaining is Edwin Diaz. While it would be somewhat surprising to see the Dodgers pony up with another big contract to a reliever given how uneven the Tanner Scott experience was last year.

According to Mets pundit Anthony DiComo of Forbes, the Dodgers could actually be looked at as the favorite for the elite reliever. It remains to be seen whether Williams was signed to take over for Diaz, or whether he was brought in to be the setup man.

This would truly be a wild turn of events. The Dodgers were never rumored to be heavily in the mix for Diaz given what he was expected to ask for. Diaz has been with the New York Mets since 2019 — registering 116 saves during this time period.

Turning 32 in March, this could be the last big contact Diaz is able to get. A multi-year deal beyond three years likely wouldn’t be something the Dodgers see as ideal.

Having said that, if he’s willing to take a high AAV deal, Diaz immediately would provide the Dodgers with a shutdown closer the team hasn’t had in years.
