Dodgers News: Hernández Duo Makes MLB History in Game 5 NLDS Win Over Padres

The home runs from Kiké Hernández and Teoscar Hernández in Game 5 of the National League Division Series was the first time in MLB history that two players with the same last name each hit a solo homer for the same team, which also accounted for all the runs in the game.

Kiké was the first to breakthrough on a pitch from Padres right-hander Yu Darvish in the second inning. The 428-foot bomb put Los Angeles on the board.

The game carried on with no stars on either team able to get something going. That all changed in the seventh inning. Teoscar’s homer gave the Dodgers the insurance run they were hoping for. Though Darvish was practically perfect Friday night, his two mistakes were against a hungry Hernández duo.

“I got a guy right here that likes the moment, too,” Kiké said, referring to Teoscar. “I’m glad we’re both on the team. I’m glad we have the same last name. I’m glad the accent goes over both A’s.”

“I told him before Game 4, never been done in the history of this game, two Hernándezes going deep in the same game in the playoffs,” Kiké added. “Didn’t happen that day because we didn’t need to. But it happened tonight, and we’re drinking Gatorade because of it.”

The Hernández duo helped the Dodgers exorcise their postseason demons and led the club to the NLCS for the first time since 2021.

“For me it’s more not running away from the big moments,” Teoscar said. “I know I’m not going to have success every time those big moments came. But not running away from it, it’s what makes me get better in every situation.”

“I learned how to control my mind, my emotions in those big situations and not trying to do too much and do the things that I know how to do, is to play the game and just trying to get a good pitch and put it in play,” Teoscar added.

The Dodgers outfielder continued to make a strong case for the team to re-sign him this winter. Teoscar hit a grand slam in Game 3 and a solo home run in Game 5. It doesn’t get bigger than that.

“I know if I hit the ball, it’s going to be a big chance that it’s going to be a positive way. Not running away from the big moments, I think, is what makes me a little better in those situations.”

When a reporter asked Kiké what his secret is to be great in October, the utility man had an amusing reply.

“I like Halloween,” he said.
