Dodgers News: MLB Drops Marketing Campaign For Shohei Ohtani’s First Playoff Run

MLB is capitalizing on Shohei Ohtani reaching the postseason for the first time in his career. The league released new player spots ahead of the Division Series, once 30-second spot titled “Once in a Generation. Twice.” highlighted Ohtani and Aaron Judge.

The league marketing for the playoffs across social media is player-focused. The creative plan featured multiple videos showcasing the best of the majors.

Each club in the Division Series was represented by one player in MLB’s latest campaign “Postseason Season”. Players featured include Ohtani, Judge, Bryce Harper, Emmanuel Clase, Bobby Witt Jr., Jackson Merrill, Tarik Skubal, and Francisco Lindor.

The campaign displays the rush of October baseball as the seasons change.

Ohtani’s marketing goes well beyond the United States. In Tokyo, Japan, MLB placed over 100 marketing pieces surrounding Ohtani. Each advertisement and billboard contained imagery of a specific home run or stolen base from Ohtani’s journey to the 50-50 club.

The Dodgers star ended his remarkable regular season with 53 home runs and 59 stolen bases, a feat no other MLB player has reached. Although Ohtani fell just short of a Triple Crown, he led the league in runs (134), RBIs (130), and OPS (1.036).

The $700 million man has been exactly what the Dodgers hoped he would be, and more. MLB is doing everything possible to make sure the Los Angeles superstar gets a considerable amount of marketing exposure in October.

The league hasn’t been able to market Ohtani in the postseason before. His former team, the Angels, never qualified for the playoffs in his six seasons with the club. His prospects of reaching the playoffs quickly changed when Ohtani signed with the Dodgers in Dec. 2023.

There was no ceiling for Ohtani in his first season with the Dodgers. Fans are hopeful he can carry the momentum into the postseason as the Dodgers look to overcome division rivals, the San Diego Padres.

Ohtani recently landed on MLB’s social media after he gave a swift response when asked if he was nervous about his first postseason appearance.

“No,” he replied.

After the best offensive season in Ohtani’s career, his confidence was rightfully earned. Anything is possible in October, especially for a once-in-lifetime player like Ohtani.
