Dodgers Option James Outman, Activate Jayson Heyward

The Los Angeles Dodgers have activated veteran outfielder Jason Heyward from the injured list and optioned outfielder James Outman. The team announced on Sunday before their third and final matchup against the Boston Red Sox.

Heyward missed the last 11 games after suffering a bone bruise in his left knee during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 4. In the meantime, Heyward had been recovering from his injury, running and doing outfield drills to soon return. That day came on Sunday, and Outman will return to the minor leagues again.

The Dodgers recalled Outman from Triple-A Oklahoma City on July 5. The 27-year-old was playing speaker in the minors, but that didn’t translate to his recent stint in the majors. In nine games since his return, Outman slashed .200/.250/.200 with a .450 OPS, three hits, zero home runs, zero RBIs, and eight strikeouts in 15 at-bats.

Heyward is now back with the big league club and will likely play a platoon role in right field. The 34-year-old has had a down year compared to the 2023 sedans, as he’s slashed .203/.299/.398 with a .698 OPS, four home runs, and 20 RBIs in 137 plate appearances.
