A hero of one of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ championship-winning minor league teams is leaving the organization ahead of the 2026 MLB playoffs.
Outfielder Alek Thomas, who hit a bases-loaded double in the 10th inning of the Triple-A National Championship Game, has elected to enter free agency, according to the MLB Transactions log.
It brings to an end his short tenure with the Dodgers.
How did Alek Thomas play as a Dodger?
Thomas, who was traded to the Dodgers by the Arizona Diamondbacks in May, didn’t play much for the Boys in Blue,
The entirety of his Dodgers MLB career was seven games in August, in which he hit .211/.250/.263/.513 with a double, three RBIs and four strikeouts.
Thomas instead spent the bulk of the 2026 season with the Oklahoma City Comets, with whom he won the Pacific Coast League championship and, ultimately, the National Championship on Sunday.
His three-RBI double in extra innings brought home the Comets’ first National Championship, but the minor-league playoffs appear to be the end of the road for his season.
Why isn’t Alek Thomas staying with the Ddogers?
Thomas, while he got that big hit, isn’t going to make the Dodgers postseason roster.
Given that his season is done, he decided to enter free agency, a move likely connected to the Dodgers’ designating him for assignment earlier this month.
He cleared waivers and rejoined the Comets soon afterward.
That said, he told Leif Skodnick of World Baseball Network he’s leaving the Dodgers organization with fond memories and more confidence in himself as a player.
“For me, honestly, like, I’m very proud of myself to go through all the things that I went through and, you know, to finish on a high note and the Dodgers helped me a lot with things I needed to work on,” Thomas, now 26, said following the game. “And, you know, I’m very blessed to be with this team and go through the things I’ve been through this season.”
Thomas added that he loved his time with the Comets, calling them “a team that sticks together, and they’re very fun and energetic.”
“I was blessed to be with this team and go through the things I’ve been through this season,” Thomas said. “I just got to push through, and that’s what I did. Good things happen when you’re having fun. So that’s what we did.”
Now, he’ll be looking for a new baseball home.
