Dodgers’ Paul Gervase Narrowly Avoids Line Drive to His Face

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Paul Gervase is the tallest hurler in team history, but his size worked against him on Monday.

In a spring training game against the Colorado Rockies, the 6-foot-10 Gervase had a 93 mph pitch driven directly back at his face by Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy.

McCarthy’s line drive knocked Gervase’s hat off and knocked the pitcher to the ground, though he quickly assured catcher Dalton Rushing that he was OK, flashing a thumbs up from the grass just off the mound.

Gervase ‘Excited’ to Join Dodgers in Run for Three-Peat

Speaking with Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain at spring training, Gervase said he’s excited to join the team amid a historic run of back-to-back World Series titles, with the first three-peat in nearly 30 years still in play.

He was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31, 2025, a decision Gervase told McKain he learned about while he was on the Rays’ team bus headed back to the hotel from Yankee Stadium.

It was while in transit that he got the call from his general manager that he was being traded, though it seems he wasn’t too upset about it.

“He was like, ‘You’re going to the Dodgers.’ I was like, alright, sounds good,” Gervase explained. “I was excited. Like you said, they’re the best team in the world, so I was excited to come here and do what I could to help this team win.”
