Dodgers Place Tyler Glasnow (Elbow Tendinitis) on Injured List

The Dodgers have placed right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow on the injured list with right elbow tendinitis. Justin Wrobleski was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move.

The move was announced minutes prior to the first pitch of Friday’s game between the Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals from Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

It’s highly unusual for the Dodgers to make a corresponding roster move for that night’s starting pitcher so soon before game time. However, manager Dave Roberts said in an interview with MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM Friday morning that multiple pitchers were dealing with physical issues, alluding to a forthcoming IL placement.

It’s the second IL stint this year for Glasnow, 30, who’s 9-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 22 starts. He missed time in July with a back issue but had made four starts since. He was scheduled to start Saturday’s game, with left-hander Clayton Kershaw penciled in for Sunday.

However, the Dodgers added Bobby Miller to their taxi squad for the weekend series in case an injury replacement was needed. He was scratched from his scheduled start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday.

Now, Miller is the most likely pitcher to step into Glasnow’s place into the rotation, on Saturday if not for longer. Juan Toribio of MLB.com reported the decision has already been made.

Miller, 25, is 1-2 with an 8.07 ERA this season. He missed most of the first half of the season due to a shoulder injury, and was ineffective upon his return. After dealing with an adductor strain, he returned to Oklahoma City and made his most recent start on Aug. 9, allowing three runs in 4.1 innings against the Round Rock Express.

The Dodgers will have to make another corresponding roster move Saturday to accommodate Miller’s return.

A right elbow injury eventually led to Tommy John surgery limited Glasnow to 16 starts from 2021-22 with the Tampa Bay Rays.

  1. What a weak team from the top down can’t stay healthy can’t play with heart ohtani is a sluggin fraud can’t hit when we need it he will pitch and get hurt too can’t wait to see this team collapse in the playoffs

  2. Can we reschedule a few games with the Round Rock Express? We have a rotation heavy on minor leaguers.

The Dodgers MUST change the way they manage their pitchers. We are like a Tommy John factory. For one thing, quit over-using rookies. Ryan is the latest tragedy, but just about every young pitcher for the Dodgers ends up under the knife. Besides that, rookie pitchers tend to flame out in the 5th-6th innings. I suggest if you are going to pitch a rookie, use an opener to get past the top of the lineup, then don’t let them go more than 4 innings. Cut a position player and add a pitcher if necessary. Something has to change, this is ridiculous.

  3. I have to agree Michael. Something is definitely wrong with the way pitchers are handled. Then add in the pitch clock factor and something has to give. Unfortunately it’s the pitchers elbow. The pitch clock probably isn’t the sole cause of these injuries but I have to think it’s a contributing factor. The management needs to take a serious look at this.
And now the commissioner wants to require the starting pitcher to stay in thru the 6th inning! I sure hope that doesn’t happen. How many more arms will go down with a stupid rule like that.
This commissioner needs to go! He’s a detriment to the game!
