Dodgers Reportedly Showing Interest in Recently DFA’d Reliever

The Los Angeles Dodgers have shown interest in Giovanny Gallegos, a recently released relief pitcher who was designated for assignment by the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reported the latest:

On the pitching side, another name to watch is veteran reliever Giovanny Gallegos. The Dodgers have expressed interest in the right-hander, according to a person with knowledge of the situation but not authorized to speak publicly, after he was designated for assignment this week.

Gallegos had served as one of the Cardinals’ top late-inning relievers but was dropped further down the bullpen hierarchy following a 2023 season in which he struggled to find his groove. His struggles only got worse in 2024.

In 21 appearances this season, Gallegos has recorded a 2-1 record with a 6.53 ERA, 21 strikeouts, a 1.65 WHIP, and an opponents’ batting average of .286 (the highest he’s allowed in his career) in 20.2 innings. The 32-year-old has been slightly better since returning from the injured list on June 21, recording a 2.31 ERA with a. 1.11 WHIP in 11.2 innings; however, certain teams could still be hesitant to make a move on the Mexican pitcher.

If Gallegos isn’t traded or claimed off waivers, he will likely elect free agency and look for a club to join at a team-friendly price.

  1. Everyone kept referring to Miguel Vargas as the player without a position … That is true do to Roberts making sure CT3 gets fulltime position player at bats. Muncy gets hurt, play a natural 3b man … I game at 3b, now traded … CRAZY

  2. OMFG….WTAF???
    Still no “impact starting pitcher”
I love a bargain too, but NOT NOW.
The team needs a starting pitcher. We were hoping for two, and we get NONE. This incredible team will be couching it through October. What a waste of talent and money.

    1. Nothing matters for this excellent club
They can never win anything with the worst mgr in baseball in charge

  3. It is terrible that we sign injured players/pitchers. They seem surprised when they get swept in the playoffs. Look at our starting pitchers has to be one of the least experienced in the league!
