Dodgers’ River Ryan Might Have Made His Final Minor League Start Tuesday; When Will He Arrive?

The Dodgers’ plan to promote River Ryan to their major league pitching staff has gained some clarity.

Ryan pitched four innings in an Arizona Complex League game on Tuesday and allowed one run, four hits and one walk. He struck out five of the 16 batters he faced.

The Dodgers wouldn’t intend for a Triple-A pitcher to linger on the lowest rung of their minor league ladder for long. Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic reported Sunday that the Dodgers plan to promote Ryan after the All-Star break, which ends Thursday. So when will we see the 25-year-old right-hander in a Los Angeles uniform?

As noted by Eric Stephen of True Blue LA, only five times to this point in the season has a Dodgers pitcher has started on four days of rest — none since Tyler Glasnow on June 9. That makes it unlikely Ryan would debut any earlier than Monday against the San Francisco Giants.

Depending on your preferred listmaker, Ryan is either the No. 1 or No. 2 prospect in the Dodgers’ organization. (FanGraphs, which ranked Ryan No. 19 overall going into the season, currently has him at No. 34 on its Top 100 board, behind Josue De Paula at No. 29.) His debut might be the most-anticipated of any Dodgers pitching prospect since Bobby Miller a year ago.

Because he is not on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster, a corresponding move would have to be made prior to Ryan’s promotion — whenever that might be. Probably Monday.

The Dodgers acquired Ryan from the Padres in exchange for Matt Beaty in a 2022 trade.
