Dodgers Sign Veteran Infielder, Who Joins Team at Spring Training

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made another minor league signing, per The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.

Veteran infielder Michael Chavis has signed with the Dodgers on a minor league deal, and joined the team at Camelback Ranch for spring training.

Chavis, 29, last played at the MLB level in 2023 with the Washington Nationals. Across 48 games, he slashed .242/.281/.341 with two home runs and five runs batted in.

Chavis’ most productive season came in 2022 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Across 129 games, the utility man slashed .229/.265/.389 with 14 home runs and 49 runs batted in.

Across his five-year career, Chavis is hitting .238 with 42 home runs, 142 RBIs, and an OPS of .685. He has experience playing first base, second base, third base, left field, and right field.

Chavis is a former first-round pick of the Boston Red Sox back in 2014. He debuted with Boston in 2019, and then was traded to the Pirates in 2021.

Last year, Chavis opened the season in the Seattle Mariners organization on a minor league deal. He triggered the opt-out clause in his contract and was released on June 1 without playing at the MLB level.

Chavis then joined the Chicago White Sox to finish the 2024 season, but didn’t reach the MLB level there.

For the Dodgers, Chavis will provide depth at the minor league level. He has essentially zero chance of making the Opening Day roster barring a ton of injuries, but will likely start the season at Triple-A, where he’ll hope to impress enough to earn a call-up if injuries start to pile up.

If not, he’ll be auditioning for other teams, hoping to get back to the major league level after a one-year hiatus.
