Dodgers Were Finalists for Tanner Scott at Trade Deadline: Report

The Los Angeles Dodgers ended up getting reliever Michael Kopech from the Chicago White Sox as part of a three-team trade involving the St. Louis Cardinals. However, they were reportedly a finalist for another reliever who ended up signing with a division rival.

Tanner Scott was traded to the San Diego Padres from the Miami Marlins and according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Dodgers were there at the end — which “may have triggered the Padres to do more.”

Scott was an All-Star in 2024 for the first time in his career. The 30-year-old has a 1.18 ERA, 370 ERA+, 3.24 FIP, and a 1.00 WHIP in 44 games and 45.2 innings this season. He is considered a rental player, as he is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. That didn’t stop the Padres from giving up a handful of players to acquire him.

The Padres gave up left-handed pitchers Robby Snelling and Adam Mazur, and infielders Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears for Scott and right-hander Bryan Hoeing:

Scott has become an elite arm out of the bullpen and will be an important arm in the Padres’ bullpen as they try to chase down the Dodgers.

Scott was originally drafted in 2014 by the Baltimore Orioles and spent his first five seasons in Baltimore before being moved to Miami in April 2022.

  1. Not picking up an elite reliever/closer will come back to haunt them. Got to give it to the Padres GM. He continues to outmaneuver the Dodgers, IMO. Results aside (although I hear their footsteps), he continues to go all out to win now. Preller knows prospects are nice, but titles are forever.

    1. What do the Padres or Preller know about titles?? The Padres have tried to go toe-to-toe with the Dodgers in spending the past few years. What we see is it isn’t how much you spend, but how you spend it. The Pads have a lot to learn in that regard. Scott was a great pickup but this is still the Dodgers division, as usual.
