ESPN Star Returning to Baseball for One Special Game

Now with ESPN, Joe Buck may have shifted off of baseball and primarily to football, but the former voice of the World Series will be back for a special game in a couple of weeks.

Buck will broadcast the Los Angeles Dodgers’ matchup with the New York Mets on April 15, which honors Jackie Robinson.

Joining Buck will be two local broadcasters, Orel Hershiser of the Dodgers and Ron Darling of the Mets, for the game, as reported by Drew Lerner of Awful Announcing.

It’s expected to be the only baseball game Buck will work this season.

Why Doesn’t Joe Buck Broadcast Much Baseball Anymore?

For about a quarter of a century, Buck was the voice of the sport.

Between 1996 and 2021, he called 24 World Series and 22 All-Star Games for Fox.

In 2022, however, he left Fox for ESPN to helm “Monday Night Football.” As part of that transition, he stepped back from covering baseball, as he “feel[s] like I’ve done all I could do there.”

“I love the sport. I love watching it. I’m so glad I did it,” he added on the Sports Illustrated Media Podcast, as detailed by Brandon Contes of Awful Announcing.

“I’m proud of how and what I did, but I don’t have that desire at the moment to just keep doing the same thing over and over and over.”

Joe Buck said of covering baseball games

It’s unlikely that Buck will cover another baseball game this season, as he only worked Opening Day in 2025.

For at least one more day, though, Buck is back in the saddle and calling America’s pastime.

What is Jackie Robinson Day?

The April 15 celebration, which is one of the can’t-miss games detailed by Dodgers Nation’s Noel Sanchez, honors Robinson, who broke the color barrier in baseball.

April 15 was the date of Robinson’s debut in Major League Baseball, when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Now, each year on that day, all players, managers and umpires across the MLB wear No. 42 in his honor, a number that’s otherwise retired across the league.
