Former Dodgers Infielder Signs Minor League Deal with Astros

Former Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Cavan Biggio has signed a minor league deal with the Houston Astros.

The versatile left-handed hitter will join the team in spring training camp as a non-roster player.

The 30-year-old is coming off a season in which he appeared in 37 games for the Kansas City Royals. The Royals had him all over the field, playing first base, second base, third base, two outfield positions and designated hitter.

In 69 major league at-bats with the Royals, Biggio slahed .174/.296/.246 with a .543 OPS and a 55 OPS+. Biggio also tallied 12 hits along with one home run and four RBIs.

The seven-year veteran reported to camp on Sunday and spoke about his excitement to get a chance with the Astros.

“I wouldn’t say it was a big dream of mine, but the Astros, I loved that team more than anything growing up,” Cavan said. “Those teams growing up, I could name every player on those teams. This organization has always been very special for me, and it’s an absolute honor to don the uniform now.”

Cavan is the son of long-time Astors infielder, Craig Biggio. Craig played his entire 20-year career with the Astros and is the franchise’s leader in games played, at-bats, hits, runs, total bases, doubles and extra-base hits.

Cavan was the ball boy when Craig reached 3,000 career hits in 2007, alongside his brother, Conor.

“That last year was something that obviously was truly special for us,” Craig said. “It was something that playing your whole career here with one team and one organization and being able to achieve a milestone like that in front of your fans and in front of your family and having your boys in the dugout as bat boy because they were old enough to do it, it was very special.”
