Former Dodgers Outfielder Joins Third Team Since Being Traded at Last Year’s Deadline

Former Dodger outfielder Trayce Thompson has found a new home. After being released by the New York Mets on July 3, Thompson signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs.

Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register reported on the news on Wednesday:

Thompson returns to the Cubs organization after spending most of his 2021 season with the club.

Thompson was designated for assignment by the Mets after posting a .800 OPS with 16 home runs and 44 RBIs in over 253 plate appearances with their Triple-A affiliate. Now, the 33-year-old will join the Cubs’ Triple-A team in Iowa to provide the struggling team with some outfield depth.

There’s a slight chance Thompson could get called up. Not only is he familiar with the organization and has major-league experience, the Cubs are 43-49 and could be positioned to sell before the July 30 trade deadline. Subtracting from their major league roster would only increase the chances of minor league call-ups.

Thompson went 1 for 4 in his Iowa Cubs debut.

Thompson has enjoyed two different stints in Los Angeles, from 2016-17 and 2022-23. The first time ended with Thompson being designated for assignment after he struggled to stay healthy. Then, at last year’s trade deadline, he was sent to the Chicago White Sox in the trade for Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn. The Cubs are his third organization since that trade.
