Guardians DFA Former Dodgers Prospect Ahead of Their Series Finale

The Cleveland Guardians have designated former Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Scott Barlow for assignment ahead of the series finale between the Guardians and Dodgers on Sunday afternoon.

Barlow pitched for the Guardians in Saturday’s 7-2 loss to the Dodgers. He pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out two.

“We’re devastated,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt told reporters of Barlow getting designated for assignment, via Kyle Glaser. “It’s never fun to deliver that news to anyone, let alone somebody like Scott Barlow. Just after where we were coming out of last night’s game and looking forward to this next week, we needed to make a move.”

Barlow was the Dodgers’ sixth-round pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, signing with the Dodgers instead of going to Fresno State. Barlow spent nearly six years in the Dodgers’ minor league system. His progress through the minor leagues was delayed after he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2012, causing him to miss the entire season.

Barlow advanced to Double-A for the first time in 2016, where he spent the entire season. Barlow went 4-7 with a 3.98 ERA and 102 strikeouts over 23 starts. The following season he played for both Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 7-6 with a 3.29 ERA and 160 strikeouts across both teams.

After the 2017 season and without a promotion to the Dodgers, Barlow elected free agency and signed with the Kansas City Royals. He quickly made his MLB debut, became the Royals’ closer, and nearly spent six seasons in Kansas City in all.

Barlow pitched his best in 2021 and 2022, posting a 2.42 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 2021 and a 2.18 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 2022.

The Royals traded Barlow to the San Diego Padres in the middle of the 2023 season, where he spent the final 25 games of the season. The Padres traded Barlow to the Guardians following the 2023 season. With the Guardians in 2024, Barlow went 3-3 with a 4.25 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 63 relief appearances.

The Dodgers also designated one of their relievers for assignment Sunday, designating Michael Petersen for assignment. Petersen was designated after allowing three earned runs in one inning on Wednesday.
