Utility player Hyeseong Kim is giving the Los Angeles Dodgers something to think about as they’re putting together the postseason roster.
Kim, who’s been with the Oklahoma City Comets since May, went 2-for-4 in Game 2 of the Pacific Coast League Championship Series Wednesday night.
Kim’s night also included a double, an RBI and a run scored in the Comets’ 7-1 win over the Las Vegas Aviators, a victory that forces a deciding Game 3 on Thursday.
It came on the heels of another 2-for-4 game for Kim on Tuesday night in which he also scored two runs, a sign of progress amid a largely uneven season at the plate.
How has Hyeseong Kim played in 2026?
Kim’s production at the major-league and minor-league levels has been virtually identical in 2026, and not in a way that shows Kim living up to his potential.
In the majors, he hit .259 with one home run and 11 RBIs.
In the minors, where he’s spent about triple the time, he is hitting .262 with three homers and 31 RBIs.
He has also stolen five bases in the majors and 15 in the minors.
While the production hasn’t necessarily been eye-popping, his skills could be a huge boon to the Dodgers in the playoffs, something manager Dave Roberts addressed recently.
What do the Dodgers plan to do with Hyeseong Kim?
Roberts said that the Dodgers plan to use next week, when they are almost assuredly going to get a bye for the wild card round, to meet with Kim and possibly add him to the postseason roster.
“My expectation is that Kim will be here during the off week and potentially be in the conversation for the postseason, because he has the ability to run and play defense and steal a base,” he said.
That said, those offensive numbers that Kim has put up in Triple-A and the majors this season give Roberts and the Dodgers coaches and executives pause, he said.
“I think for Hyeseong, it’s the at bat consistency,” Roberts said. “I don’t think that his offense has been consistent.”
Especially compared to some of the other players who are fighting for a playoff roster spot, Kim’s relative inconsistency could spell doom for his postseason hopes.
“For us, the at bat quality, for example, that Alex Freeland is giving us has been very good,” Roberts said. “He gets on base. I think for Hyeseong, just trying to find something consistent and perform consistently. And to be quite frank, he just hasn’t been as consistent as he can be. But if he can get more consistent with the bat, then he can be a big piece.”
Dodgers fans will find out in the coming days if Kim has indeed done enough to earn a spot for October, but his supporters can rest assured that he’s putting his best foot forward in these Triple-A playoffs.
