Legendary Filmmaker Rob Reiner Was Longtime Dodgers Fan For Over 60 Years

The Los Angeles Dodgers expressed their condolences over award-winning filmmaker Rob Reiner as well as his wife, Michele, who died Sunday.

“The Dodgers express our deep sorrow and share our condolences over the passing of longtime fan Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele,” the team’s message read.

Reiner, who had a huge hand in films such as “A Few Good Men” and “The Princess Bride”, had been a Dodger fan for the majority of his life. Reiner was born in New York before moving to Los Angeles as a teenager. He became a Dodgers fan shortly after and, as of 2023, had been a season ticket holder for “about 60 years.”

A lifelong fan of the game, Reiner told PEOPLE how he came to love baseball.

“Ready for a great story? My dad took me to my first game,” Reiner said. “It’s 1951 at Yankee Stadium, and it’s a doubleheader. The Yankees were playing the Washington Senators. It was Mickey Mantle’s first year in the Majors and Joe DiMaggio’s last.

“I was four years old and I stayed through both games. I was fascinated. I was hooked at that point.”

Reiner also attended Game 1 of the 1988 World Series with Michele, during which Kirk Gibson hit a famous walk-off home run.

“I’ll never forget it,” Reiner said. “It was the first time we were ever … together, and Kirk Gibson, I hate to say it, was the aphrodisiac.”

Rob and Michele married in 1989, the year after the Dodgers’ famous World Series win.

Reiner will not just be remembered as an award-winning filmmaker, but also as a devoted, passionate Dodgers fan. Dodgers Nation extends its condolences to their loved ones.
