Longtime Evaluator Says Bobby Witt is Best Player in World Over Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani did not disappoint in his inaugural season with the team.

Ohtani is coming off one of the most dominant offensive seasons in the history of the sport, as he set career-highs in home runs, hits, runs scored, runs batted in, doubles, and stolen bases, and invented the 50 home run, 50 stolen base club, finishing with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases.

The Dodgers superstar, who is normally a two-way player, served as the team’s exclusive designated hitter for the 2024 season as he recovered from UCL surgery. Nevertheless, Ohtani won a World Series ring in his first trip to the postseason and capped off the marvelous campaign with a unanimous NL MVP award.

It was one of the greatest performances in the history of Major League Baseball, and yet, there will always be some who want to taint the talent of Ohtani, one of the greatest to ever play the game.

MLB insider Jeff Passan revealed an anonymous evaluator named Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. as the best player in the world.

“Earlier this spring, a longtime evaluator said he thinks Witt is the best player in the world,” Passan wrote. “Better than Shohei Ohtani even? Well, yes, he said, at least until Ohtani is back pitching.”

In 2024, Witt slashed .332/.389/.588 with 32 homers, 31 stolen bases and 109 RBI in 161 games. The shortstop’s 88 extra-base hits ranked third in MLB, behind Ohtani (99) and New York Yankees star Aaron Judge (95).

Witt finished runner-up in American League MVP voting, and certainly earned praise for having the third best defensive rating in the big leagues. It appears the unnamed evaluator values Witt’s contributions on both offense and defense, but in order to be the best player in the world, a player’s value on a global scale should certainly be factored in.

Ohtani is not only talented, he’s also the most well-known MLB player around the world. Is there really anyone as close to the Dodgers superstar in terms of skill and fame?

The answer is quite simple: No.
