Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas, who plans to retire at the end of the 2026 season, left Sunday’s loss against the Miami Marlins with injury.
Rojas left the game in the top of the ninth inning, having aggravated his shoulder in the bottom of the eighth while diving to try to make a play on a ball up the middle. Tommy Edman replaced Rojas in the top of the ninth, then remained in the game at second for the bottom of the ninth.
After the game, Rojas revealed he has played through a labrum tear throughout the majority of his career, and hopes a cortisone injection will keep him in the mix throughout the remainder of the season.
“It’s really sore right now,” said Rojas. “I’m probably gonna get an injection. So this is not gonna be something new for me. I [have played] through some shoulder pain before and kind of like what I felt in that place, my lever there that I have on my right shoulder, maybe got a little bigger. It got worse because I felt a little bit of a pop on the back of my shoulder. So we’ll see ‘till tomorrow and see how it feels in the next 24, 48 hours.”
A Bittersweet Goodbye to Miami
Rojas spent the majority of his career with the Marlins after the Dodgers traded him ahead of the 2015 season, playing eight years in Florida before making an eventual return to the Dodgers.
Sunday served as his last chance to play in front of the fans at LoanDepot Park in Miami, and it definitely didn’t end the way he would have wanted. His injury certainly dampened his special day, and a loss for the Dodgers in heartbreaking fashion put the cherry on top.
Rojas didn’t have a bad individual performance, though, reaching base three times in the contest.
How Has Miguel Rojas Performed in 2026?
As always, Rojas has played an important role as a veteran infield depth piece for the Dodgers this season. Through 94 games, the 37-year-old has a .704 OPS with three homers and 20 RBIs, though most of his value comes with the glove.
He has a plus-2 fielding run value, grading just above league average, and his plus-3 outs above average rank in the top 15% of MLB.
Rojas doesn’t expect to miss much time, but if he does, the Dodgers have plenty of depth to take his spot. Alex Freeland is with the team after they brought him up at the beginning of September, and Tommy Edman is also healthy and can play second base.
If the injury restricts Edman from playing in center to fill in for Rojas, the Dodgers have their newest member, Josue De Paula, who can fill in a corner outfield spot while someone else takes over center field. The Dodgers likely won’t roll Rojas out for their series opener against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, but he could very well feature before the end of that four-game series.
