MLB Insider Says Cody Bellinger is a Better Fit for NL Rival

The MLB’s Winter Meetings have provided several huge signings already, and another big development came on Wednesday.

All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso reportedly signed a five-year, $155 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles, becoming the second New York Met to avoid re-signing with the team in as many days.

With one of the biggest bats in the league now missing from the lineup, MLB insider Jon Morosi named Cody Bellinger as a player who could potentially fill Alonso’s spot in the lineup in Queens.

Bellinger has been heavily linked to teams across MLB this offseason, but the Dodgers are perhaps the most hopeful for his signature.

The 30-year-old spent the first six seasons of his MLB career with the Dodgers, but left following a couple of rough years wearing blue. Now a free agent, he has been linked to a return to Dodger Stadium, but with so many teams hungry for bats, that may not happen.

Bellinger returned to top form after leaving the Dodgers, batting well above league average in all three of the seasons he’s played since LA non-tendered him. He’s slashing .281/.338/.477 across those three seasons, and has placed Top 15 in MVP voting twice.

In 2025, Bellinger hit 29 home runs and drove in 98 RBIs, both of which were his most since his MVP season in 2019.

The Dodgers are short an outfielder after Michael Conforto’s exit into free agency, and could very well look to Bellinger to replace him. Bellinger’s agent Scott Boras revealed the former MVP isn’t opposed to a homecoming.

“I think Cody had a great, great experience here. Rookie of the Year. MVP. And he was Hollywood ringing while he was here so I think that players who have those kinds of experiences over the years are always very welcoming of anywhere like that,” Boras told Dodgers Nation host Doug McKain.

With another top team also pursuing his signature, though, the Dodgers will have to act fast if they’re to bring back the MVP.

  1. Dodgers need to sign Cody Bellinger to become the juggernaut they want to be. He’s the best defensive centerfielder they have ever had out there in my lifetime. A beautiful combination of speed and power. If they are going to continue with Elmer Fudd as manager, they need to continue to field a team that plays themselves.
