National Reporter Predicts Giants More Likely Than Dodgers To Sign Juan Soto

This offseason, the biggest free agent watch will surround star New York Yankees outfielder Juan Soto. Soto has had a great first season in the Bronx, but the two sides haven’t come to terms on an extension as of yet.

This means that the left-handed hitting star will most likely test free agency once the season is over. Much like how Shohei Ohtani’s free agency was last offseason, the baseball world will be watching closely to see what Soto does.

Many believe the Yankees and New York Mets will be the two most prevalent teams in the chase for Soto, but there are always some surprises along the way.

National reporter Mark Feinsand of MLB.com predicted favorites and dark horses to land Soto this winter. He mentioned the Dodgers might not be in on the lefty slugger, but that the rival San Francisco Giants could be.

The Yankees and Mets are obvious. I think this will be a two-team race, but there’s already been some Nationals buzz, which makes sense Washington has a solid young core to build around and has a lot of money coming off the books. I don’t think the Dodgers will be in on Soto after signing Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto last year, but the Giants are still looking to reel in that big fish they have been seeking for two years, so I expect them to enter this fray.

Soto landing in San Francisco would be awful for Los Angeles, as they would then have to deal with him being in the NL West again — likely for a very long term. If the Dodgers aren’t signing Soto, the best course of action would be for the star to remain in New York, preferably with the Yankees.

Anyone discrediting the Giants in the potential Soto race should understand that they are desperate at this point. Desperate teams tend to do abnormal things, so San Francisco will likely be a player in this free agency.

Even insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post listed the Giants as a potential landing spot for Soto a few weeks back.

But we also can’t completely count the Dodgers out. Their front office has shown a willingness and ability to spend over the last year never before seen in the history of the franchise — or the sport. With Ohtani on the roster now, the level of urgency to win has skyrocketed. The Dodgers seem to always at least have a conversation with players on the level of Soto.

While it’s unlikely Los Angeles will get heavily into the Soto race, anything is possible, especially if the Dodgers fail to win the World Series this season.
