The Kansas City Royals exercised former Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin’s club option for the 2027 season.
Gonsolin, 32, made his debut with the Dodgers in 2019, and played with the team through 2025, serving on the 2020 World Series team.
When Did Tony Gonsolin Join the Royals?
Gonsolin signed with the Royals Aug. 13, heading straight to the injured list as he recovered from a surgery on his right elbow. He only made one appearance for the team after his late-season return to action, allowing five earned runs through 2.2 innings for a 16.88 ERA.
He also appeared in four minor-league contests while rehabbing from the injury, posting a 4.41 ERA through 16.1 innings pitched.
Gonsolin’s option keeps him on the team for the 2027 season, and he will earn $2.5 million for his services.

How Did Tony Gonsolin Perform for the Dodgers?
The Dodgers selected Gonsolin in the ninth round of the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft, and he spent a few years in the farm before making his debut in 2019. He pitched 11 times for the Dodgers that season, six of which were starts, and had a respectable 2.93 ERA through an even 40 innings.
Gonsolin continued to impress during the COVID-abbreviated 2020 season, pitching on nine occasions to the tune of a 2.31 ERA while striking out 46 batters in 46.2 innings. Additionally, Gonsolin appeared four times during the Dodgers’ postseason run, though his results weren’t quite what they were during the regular season. Through those four games, he allowed nine runs in 9.1 innings.
He looked good through the following two seasons, making 39 appearances with a 2.47 ERA in 2021 and 2022. The right-hander earned his first and only All-Star appearance to date in 2022, when he had a 2.14 ERA in 24 games.
Gonsolin’s form began to trend downwards in 20233, though, when he went down late in the season and had to undergo Tommy John surgery, knocking him out for the entirety of 2024.
Injuries continued to plague him in 2025, as a back issue kept him on the sidelines through April and his elbow injury knocked him out for the rest of the season after just seven starts. After the 2025 season, the Dodgers designated Gonsolin for assignment.
Despite his recent downturn, Gonsolin has plenty of time to get right before the 2027 season.
