Scott Boras Tried to Sign Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani as Client Before He Joined MLB

A recent story focused around super agent Scott Boras revealed some interesting factoids involving Los Angeles Dodgers star player Shohei Ohtani.

In a story for Bloomberg Wealth written by Ira Boudway, Kyle Kim, and Dylan Sloan, it was revealed that Boras made multiple efforts to try and sign Ohtani as a client.

Here’s an except from the article:

“Ohtani isn’t one of Boras’ clients, though not for lack of trying. Before Ohtani came to the US in 2018, Boras flew to Japan five times and met his parents in an effort to land him, only to lose out to CAA’s Nez Balelo.”

Ohtani was considered a prodigious prospect dating back to his high school days in the remote village of Mizusawa, Japan. Reports indicate that Ohtani was throwing in the high 90s as a teenager. Coupled with his prowess at the plate, it’s no surprise to learn that a host of MLB clubs were interested in signing him.

Even to this day, Boras is considered — for better or worse — to be the most notorious agent in the game. He’s brokered contracts collectively worth billions of dollars for decades. Known as a tough customer when it comes to negotiations, it’s quite telling that an agent of his stature would fly across the Pacific Ocean on five separate occasions to try and ink Ohtani to a deal.

An ex-player himself, Boras clearly understood the upside Ohtani brought to the table — and presumably the marketing opportunities in the process.

It must’ve been a tough pill for Boras to swallow when seeing Ohtani routinely play in Anaheim. With deep roots in Orange County, Boras often is seen sitting behind home plate for games at Angel Stadium. There was an alternate world in which Boras would’ve been representing Ohtani AND Juan Soto in back-to-back offseason periods.

Imagine the payday he would’ve received as their representation…
