Teoscar Hernández Opens Up on Relationship With Shohei Ohtani on Dodgers

Teoscar Hernández and Shohei Ohtani have already cemented themselves in Los Angeles Dodgers history, despite just one season on the team.

At the start of the storied 2024 campaign, the two veterans bonded over the fact that they were both newcomers to the Dodgers.

Hernández spoke on Ohtani in an interview with Grandes de las Deportes and discussed the relationship that developed between the two stars.

“We tried to create a relationship, especially because we were both new on the team. At that time, we felt a little more isolated, so we found comfort in each other. And that’s how we built our relationship.”

Their relationship however did not start when they became teammates, but when they were competitors.

“When we played against each other, for some reason, he always greeted me, and I greeted him” Hernández said, “I don’t know if he liked me, but we created this dynamic where, out of nowhere, we started talking a lot. He would come to my office, ask me how I was, and I would do the same.”

Their bond started as competitors, but as teammates, the connection grew stronger. Hernández successfully taught Ohtani — and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, another newcomer to Los Angeles — some Spanish words that were debuted last Feburary.

While affectionately resting his head on Hernández’s shoulder, the soon-to-be National League MVP said, “buenos dias fanaticos.” Hernández even encourages Yamamoto to share a “buenos dias” as well towards the end of the video.

Ohtani is a genrational talent both on the mound and in the batter’s box. Hernández is an extremely gifted hitter, one that was crucial for Los Angeles in the postseason with his trio of home runs and 12 runs batted in. The character of these two men and their infectious personalities don’t just improve the team in terms of on-field production, but in the clubhouse, as well.

Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas perfectly described to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez the presence the first-year Dodgers brought to the table.

“Shohei is obviously going to be MVP of the entire league, but to me, outside of him, Teoscar is our MVP.”

Hopefully the duo can continue progressing their bond while adding to the franchise’s storied history for years to come.
