Tommy Edman Provides Crucial Injury Update as Dodgers’ Spring Training Nears

Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Tommy Edman provided an injury update during DodgerFest Saturday.

Edman underwent offseason surgery on his right ankle and revealed the timetable for his return depends on how he progresses in each step of his rehab.

“The timetable is more just kind of as I progress. So, it’s kind of hard to to say exactly when I’ll be ready to, you know, hop back in a Major League game again,” Edman said at DodgerFest Saturday. “As of right now, this past week, I just took dry swings for the first time and then started my throwing progression again.

“I got the boot off like two and a half weeks ago. The last two and a half weeks I’ve been working into walking and pushing off it more. I got into like light skipping this week. Hopefully jogging next this next week. So you know, that’s kind of where I’m at right now and each step along the way, it’s kind of just being patient and making sure I’m hitting all the checkpoints with with no discomfort. And everything I’ve done so far has felt really good.”

Will Tommy Edman Be Ready for Opening Day?

Edman’s Opening Day status remains up in the air and that became increasingly evident by the Dodgers’ signing of former Detroit Tigers infielder Andy Ibañez.

Ibañez joined the back-to-back World Series champions on a one-year deal and is expected to compete for a chance to play second base at spring training. The Dodgers will evaluate several young options, who could potentially man the position while Edman recovers, this spring.

Two of those options are Alex Freeland and Hyeseong Kim, both of whom will be competing for an Opening Day roster spot at camp.

What Position Will Tommy Edman Play for the Dodgers in 2026?

The signing of All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker in many ways provided clarity for the Dodgers’ second base situation. Edman will likely be the Dodgers’ primary second baseman for the 2026 season.

While he split time between centerfield and second base last season, Tucker’s arrival to LA allows the Dodgers to utilize Edman mainly in the infield. Manager Dave Roberts used Edman sparingly in the outfield last season because of the ankle injury that hampered the 30-year-old.

General manager Brandon Gomes spoke about the ongoing injury, which bothered Edman throughout 2025.

“This was clearly bothering him for a while,” Gomes said. “He’s so tough and went out there and kept just posting for us, and obviously played great for us. So I think it’ll be good to get it addressed, and then that way he can kind of have this behind him.”

Now, the hope is that Edman won’t be affected by the injury this season as the Dodgers chase the three-peat.
