Tommy Edman Provides Update on Injury, Timeline to Play for Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired utility player Tommy Edman as part of a three team trade with the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals that brought Edman, Michael Kopech, and Oliver Gonzalez to Los Angeles.

Edman has yet to play this season after he was shut down during spring training because of discomfort in his wrist from offseason wrist surgery. The 29-year-old was transferred to the 60-day injured list early in the season, and has also been bugged by an ankle issue this year.

The Dodgers are set to re-evaluate Edman over the next few days to decide when he will be ready to return to MLB action. He was on a minor league rehab assignment with the Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate at the time of the trade.

Now, per Bill Plunkett of the O.C. Register, Edman will soon talk to the Dodgers about his next step.

Edman joins the Dodgers after spending his entire career with the Cardinals. The former 2016 sixth-round pick made his MLB debut in 2019, and has played all over the field including third base, second base, shortstop, and center field. He is a strong defender, having won a Gold Glove award in 2021 and a Fielding Bible award in 2022.

When he was last healthy in 2023, Edman slashed .248/.307/.399 with 119 hits, 69 runs, 13 home runs and 47 RBIs in 137 games. While Edman has missed the entirety of this season so far, he played more than 130 games over each of the three seasons prior.

In addition to Edman, the trade also landed the Dodgers reliever Michael Kopech, who has a 4.74 ERA, 59 strikeouts, and nine saves this season. Gonzalez, a minor league pitcher, also comes to the Dodgers. The 17-year-old rookie-level pitcher has a 4.22 ERA and 26 strikeouts through seven games, four of which were starts.

  1. you almost can hear the shaking in fear from the other teams in the NL with this superstar addition.

  2. The Dodgers still need a true shortstop and third baseman and unfortunately Kershaw is finished. Hopefully he can comeback but Father Time is undefeated and untied!
