Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed second baseman Tommy Edman would miss Opening Day following surgery on his ankle this offseason.
Edman struggled with injury during 2025, spending two separate stints on the injured list and exclusively playing second base rather than center field following his injury.
“Tommy certainly won’t be ready for Opening Day,” Roberts said.
Roberts also revealed how Edman has progressed since arriving at Camelback Ranch for spring training.
“He took some swings a couple days ago, both sides, he did some skipping, some light jogging I think it was,” Roberts said. “Getting his body into baseball shape. Obviously he’s not going to be ready for the start of camp and he’s in that same bucket of ‘when he’s ready he’s ready.’ Each day there’s progress.”

How Important was Tommy Edman to the Dodgers in 2025?
Edman played 66 games at second base last season, more than anyone else on the roster. Despite his two spells on the injured list, he still featured in 97 games.
His offense took a dip in 2025, as he slashed .225/.274/.382 for a .656 OPS. He still managed to tie his career high in home runs with 13, though, and also logged 49 RBIs.
Edman arrived in L.A. in 2024 via trade from the St. Louis Cardinals, and has been a staple of the team since his arrival.
Who Will Play Second Base in Edman’s Absence?
Roberts also commented on the Dodgers’ other options at second base, and there are several solid choices for the spot.
“I think Hyeseong’s in the mix, we’ve got [Santiago] Espinal, obviously Miggy Ro is going to do some things over there, Freeland certainly in the mix, so we’re got some nice options,” Roberts said.
Hyeseong Kim, Miguel Rojas and Alex Freeland all featured at second base for the Dodgers in 2025, and Santiago Espinal — who signed a minor league deal Monday morning — has played second base in some capacity since his debut season in 2020.
While Edman is an unfortunate miss for the Dodgers, they have done well in reinforcing their infield and will definitely have a replacement ready until he makes his return.
