Yankees Ace Gerrit Cole Undergoing Tommy John Surgery; Can Dodgers Trade Any Pitchers to NY?

New York Yankees right-handed pitcher and ace Gerrit Cole will miss the entire 2025 season after he undergoes Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, the team announced.

This is a brutal blow for both Cole and the Yankees, as they were looking to get back to the World Series after losing in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers last year.

With Cole out for the year, the Yankees need some help in the rotation — especially with reigning American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil also out for the foreseeable future.

Thus, the Yankees will likely start looking in free agency and via the trade market, and the Dodgers could potentially be a fit.

The Dodgers have an embarrassment of pitchers after back-to-back aggressive offseasons. Despite a few injuries to key pitchers, the Dodgers still have plenty of rotational options that could help New York.

First and foremost, the Yankees could be interested in either Tony Gonsolin or Dustin May, who are each competing for the No. 5 starter spot which has now been decided. Neither has pitched at the MLB level since 2023, but Gonsolin was an All-Star in 2022, and May has some of the best stuff in the league when he’s on.

Additionally, the Yankees could be interested in younger players such as Landon Knack, Ben Casparius, or Justin Wrobleski, who could provide serious length for the Yankees’ injury-riddled rotation.

While it’s unclear whether the Dodgers would be interested in moving any of these players, it’s always important to listen, especially when a team is desperate like the Yankees.

If general manager Brian Cashman calls president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman for any of these five players, it’s safe to assume he’ll engage.
