Cardinals Have Reengaged Dodgers in Nolan Arenado Trade Talks: Report
The Los Angeles Dodgers have won the offseason by leaps and bounds, but the defending champions could still make a blockbuster trade before the season begins.
It’s widely known the Dodgers plan on re-signing veteran pitcher Clayton Kershaw this winter, but general manager Brandon Gomes said the team would at least consider adding even more talent before Opening Day.
“We’ve obviously stayed in touch with Kersh and I think our sentiments are out there and we know Kersh also wants to be a Dodger for life,” Gomes told MLB insider Jon Heyman. “So we’ll continue to be in contact with him.
“On the other front, you never say never and we’ll continue to be opportunistic at looking at places at how to round out the roster. But we feel very happy with what we’ve done to this point. And if spring training started tomorrow, we feel like we’d be in a very good place.”
With less than a week before pitchers and catcher report, an opportunity has arisen for the Dodgers.
The St. Louis Cardinals have re-engaged the World Series champions in trade talks for All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado. The Dodgers were linked to Arenado since he posted a series of photos on his Instagram with the song “dodger blue.”
While it was publicly known Arenado wanted to play for L.A., it was unclear whether the Dodgers were going to pursue the 10-time Gold Glove winner. However, now that the Cardinals are willing to eat up more of Arenado’s salary, the Dodgers may see it as an offer too good to resist.
Cardinals beat writer John Denton explained the situation.
“A sticking point in any Arenado deal could come down to how much of the $64 million remaining on Arenado’s contract the Cardinals are willing to absorb,” Denton wrote. “Initial trade talks in early January broke down when the Cardinals refused to pay as much as $20 million toward the balance of Arenado’s contract, a source said. After failing to make much trade progress elsewhere throughout January, the Cardinals reengaged the Red Sox, Yankees and Dodgers about possible restructured deals for the star third baseman.”
If baseball fans were upset before, they will certainly explode if the Dodgers land Arenado.
Then again, every team has had the opportunity to trade for Arenado if they wanted to.

Eat half the contract and take CT3, and it’s a deal.
I know they say CT3 is not being mentioned anywhere, but it would be a massive upgrade.
Where does that leave Muncy???? But that glove of Arenado is still there. And he can hit 6th or 7th in this lineup. He wouldn’t need to hit 4th or 5th.
You are right. Any deal involving Arenado but include CT3 or no deal!!!!!
Would LOVE the move! Improves your defense at 3rd, Muncy can still spell any position other than SS. Any time you can get a hall of famer. Get him!! Lets Geaux Dodgers !! New Orleans Dodger!
By the numbers it looks like he’s on the downside of his career. Still I’m sure has a better glove than Max, but I think Muncy’s bat is still better. Overall I see a very modest upside.
I SAY..GET R DONE…ONLY IF THEY TAKE CT3..WE COULD STILL PICK UP KIKIE FOR BENCH PLAYER AND UTILITY
Agree on CT3 going. That’s the same as StL paying $16M of Arenado’s contract. CT3 and a prospect or two … not one of their top ones.
If I was Andrew Friedman, I’d definitely go for it! Nolan Arenado may not be the SuperStar he once was, but he’s still damn good! Max Muncy already said he’d be happy to move over to second base, if the Dodgers got Arenado! Hyseong Kim can be their Super Utility Player! And it’s a no-brainer to bring Kike back! The Dodger Fans love him and he’s King Kong in the Post Season! Don’t forget to bring Kersh back too!!! Let’s Go Dodgers!!!!!
If the Cards take Taylor and Muncy the money would be a wash this year.
The Dodgers have their eye on Japanese 3rd baseman Murakami for 2026… So they really shouldn’t now be adding a 3 year contact for an aged/declining overly expensive and generally un-needed veteran to eat up another valuable 40-man roster spot…
Arena do would be a great fit and would send Muncy to the Cardinals who are in need of left hand power in their line up. Taylor might go with Max but, we’ll have to watch and see.
We wrote about this earlier, and posted it to Dodgers Nation. As an ex-player, defensively, Arenado would be an ideal fit to solidify the left side of the Dodgers’ infield. Mookie Betts needs help with balls in the hole, and Arenado has the speed and quickness to cut balls off before they go deep in the hole, making the play very difficult for any shortstop, let alone an inexperienced Betts. Muncy is a MUST GO. He’s a K waiting to happen, an inconsistent long ball hitter, and a mediocre 3rd baseman at age 35-36. BE SMART LA…PROTECT MOOKIE & DEAL FOR NOLAN!
