Dave Roberts Calls Tyler Glasnow Return to Dodgers This Season ‘Highly Unlikely’

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Saturday that starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow has a sprained elbow and is “highly unlikely” to return this season, per The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.

The update comes one day after the Dodgers called off Glasnow’s simulated game. Glasnow was scheduled to face hitters on Friday but ended up going back to the clubhouse, via Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times.

The Dodgers originally placed Glasnow on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 16 due to elbow tendinitis. Even with Glasnow going on IL, the general feeling was that Glasnow would be able to return by the end of the regular season and postseason. Both Roberts and Glasnow expressed optimism that he would return, which has quickly dissipated.

Nearly one month later, it appears there is nearly no chance that Glasnow returns to pitch, leaving Los Angeles without their Opening Day starter going into October.

Glasnow last started for the Dodgers on Aug. 11 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Overall on the season, Glasnow is 9-6 with a 3.49 ERA and a career-high 168 strikeouts over 22 starts. He additionally was named to his first MLB All-Star team.

Glasnow previously landed on the IL in July with a back injury but returned at the end of the month. He only started five games following the injury, before his elbow injury brought his return to the IL.

The 31-year-old is in his first season with the Dodgers since he was traded to Los Angeles from the Tampa Bay Rays last December. Glasnow signed a five-year, $136.5 million extension upon signing with the Dodgers, with the expectation he would lead this rotation.

Unfortunately for Glasnow and the Dodgers, his history of being injury-plagued has returned. Prior to this season, Glasnow had undergone Tommy John surgery and also dealt with injuries to his shoulder, oblique, and arm strain.

With Glasnow, Gavin Stone, and Clayton Kershaw all on the IL, the Dodgers’ starting rotation continues to look grim heading into October.
