Mets Star Dealing With Major Injury in NLCS vs Dodgers

Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo limped through New York’s 9-0 loss to the Dodgers in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series. But, it was not the disappointment from the tough loss that hurt Nimmo. It was his left foot, which he told The Athletic after Sunday’s game, was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis in May.

Nimmo believes the injury worsened in the sixth inning of Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Phillies. He told The Athletic running is painful for his foot but he faces minimal pain when batting or fielding.

“Right now it hurts pretty good,” Nimmo said to The Athletic’s Tim Britton after an 0-for-3 day at the plate. “The second-to-last game against Philadelphia, I did something on the field and made it quite a bit worse. … When it gets inflamed and flares up, it’s a harder thing to calm down.”

After defeating the Phillies in four games, the Mets had three days of rest before starting the NLCS. Nimmo told Britton that the extra rest improved his foot injury a bit but not enough to be fully healed.

The 31-year-old also endured a right shoulder sprain at the end of September. As a result, Nimmo made a brief appearance on the 10-day injured list. It is unclear if there is any lingering pain in his shoulder. Regardless, Nimmo is determined to stay in the lineup.

“It’s the NLCS,” Nimmo said to The Athletic. “You do whatever you can in order to get out there and help in any way you can.”

Nimmo made 142 starts between left and center field in the regular season, which was the most starts for any Mets outfielder this season. In addition to his defensive prowess, Nimmo is one of the Mets’ best hitters. Nimmo switches between the No. 3 and No. 4 spot in the batting lineup, making him a key hitter for New York.

In Game 2 of the NLCS, he went 0-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts.
