Dodgers Among Teams Scouting Mets’ All-Star Starter

The Los Angeles Dodgers sent scouts to watch New York Mets starter Clay Holmes make a rehab start in Florida on Tuesday.

“Scouts from the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks were among those who flocked to Dunedin, Fla., to evaluate Holmes, out since mid-May after a fibula fracture,” Will Sammon of The Athletic wrote.

Holmes, a two-time All-Star and proven MLB pitcher, hasn’t pitched since May, going to the injured list with a fibula fracture. He’s made two rehab appearances so far, the first coming in Triple-A and the most recent coming in Single-A.

After allowing two runs in 2.1 innings in Triple-A, Holmes had a strong showing in Single-A, throwing four shutout innings on 59 pitches with three strikeouts.

Per Sammon, Holmes’ next start will come a day before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, though whether it will be for a minor league affiliate or the Mets isn’t known.

Prior to his injury, Holmes had been putting together a fairly strong season through his nine starts. The veteran posted a 2.39 ERA through 52.2 innings pitched, allowing just three home runs and striking out 45 batters.

Why Would the Dodgers Need Clay Holmes?

The Dodgers—at least at the moment—are struggling for arms in their starting rotation, especially with Shohei Ohtani shut down from pitching indefinitely.

On top of the knee issue he’s been wrestling for over a month, Ohtani revealed he had a biceps issue as well following the Dodgers’ 7-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.

“My bicep’s not 100%,” Ohtani said. “Similar issue with the knee, do we consider pushing this? It is still July so I think the conversation would be a little different if we’re in August or September.”

Ohtani isn’t the only starter absent, as Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow have also been missing from the rotation for several months, though they seem to be trending in the right direction. The Dodgers may not need to bring a starter in with their injured players returning, but keeping their options open for a player who would be much cheaper than Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal isn’t a bad idea.

  1. Get rid of Sheehan he will never be a 3,4,or a 5th option. You never know when he takes the mound what is going to happen. Inconsistent anyone else is a better option
