Dodgers Announce Shohei Ohtani’s Catcher, Two-Way Status vs. Padres

The Los Angeles Dodgers are indeed allowing Dalton Rushing to catch Shohei Ohtani during his pitching start against the San Diego Padres following all of the controversy.

Rushing has been in the hot seat since his public moment with Ohtani during his last start.

Ohtani, a character who is as easy-going an elite player as you will find, got fed up with Rushing’s pitch selection and approach to ABS challenges.

Naturally, questions were raised about the future of the pairing, especially with Rushing having lost his cool at other moments in games, and the moment being so rare for Ohtani.

However, manager Dave Roberts has confirmed that Rushing will be behind the plate on Friday, June 3rd, when Ohtani makes his next start.

Additionally, it will be a two-way day for Ohtani, who will also end up hitting in his leadoff spot, per Roberts.

These developments are notable, as Ohtani has been managing knee inflammation in his landing leg, and the Dodgers have made it clear they want to be careful with his usage.

Additionally, the moment serves as a massive vote of confidence in Rushing, who is still in his first full season as a major leaguer.

What does Shohei Ohtani say about Dalton Rushing?

After the Twins game, Ohtani revealed that he took over pitch-calling as an act of leading by example and showing Rushing what he ideally wants.

“There’s really two ways of communicating … one is by words, but the other way to be able to communicate is by example, and just taking charge and showing Rush what kind of pitching style I’m capable of,” Ohtani said about taking over the pitch-calling duties.

“In an ideal world, where I want to be is [in a place] for both of us to pitch in and really be able to shine because we have very different talents. That’s the goal I want to go towards.”

It will be interesting to see how Friday pans out, but considering Rushing’s hard-working attitude and Ohtani’s overall support for teammates, things should go much more smoothly with proper preparation.
