The Los Angeles dropped the final game of a three-game series against the Athletics, failing to generate much offense as they lost, 7-1.
The Dodgers only managed five hits against the A’s in the series finale, and their only run of the game came in the third inning. Recently recalled Charlie Barnes pitched seven innings for the Dodgers, coming in after Jack Dreyer opened for him, and allowed all seven of the A’s’ runs. He struck out two batters during his outing and allowed 12 hits.
The A’s took an early lead through Jonah Heim in the second inning, as the backup catcher hit a 444-foot home run off of Barnes. LA scored the next run to level the game in the top of the third inning, as Freddie Freeman hit a solo homer of his own.
After Freeman’s homer, the A’s took over the game—scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead and adding on in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-1. The A’s walked and double to lead off the inning in the bottom of the fourth, putting runners in scoring position with no outs. Lawrence Butler grounded out to score the first run of the frame and Henry Bolte singled to score the second.
Potential AL All-Star Shea Langeliers led off the fifth with a homer the following inning, followed by three consecutive hits to score the next two runs.
The final run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth, as Alika Williams hit his second career homer to extend the hosts’ lead to six runs.
The top of the Dodgers’ lineup struggled to generate much offense during the game, recording just three hits through their 16 collective at-bats. Freddie Freeman only accounted for two of those at-bats, as LA lifted him from the game after they went down big.
Mookie Betts originally sat in the No. 4 spot before the game, but the Dodgers scratched him late due to soreness in his wrist.
Los Angeles jumps straight back into action Thursday, as they begin a four-game series against the San Diego Padres in front of the home crowd. The Dodgers still sit 12 games ahead in the division, and will look to further their lead over the next four games.
