Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw ended his fantastic career on a high note, winning the World Series in seven games against the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025.
The World Series win was Kershaw’s third, and marked the first time he had been on the winning side of a World Series Game 7. The last time his team played a Game 7 in the World Series, though, there was plenty of controversy.
The Dodgers lost Game 7 of the 2017 World Series against the Houston Astros, however there was much more to the story than that. Two years after the World Series, the MLB punished the Astros for cheating during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

In a recent interview, Kershaw spoke about his experiences in Game 7, and took some time to take a shot at the Astros for 2017.
“I’ve been to one other seven-game World Series, and we lost one — well there’s an asterisk on that one — but we won this one,” Kershaw said.
The Astros illegally used cameras to steal signs in both 2017 and 2018, giving them an unfair advantage over their counterparts. The Dodgers weren’t guaranteed to win the series had the Astros not cheated, but it definitely played a part in how the series panned out.
MLB punished the Astros after an investigation in 2020, slamming them with heavy fines and suspensions while also stripping them of draft picks, however Dodgers players and fans will never forget how the Astros wronged them.

During the 2017 World Series, Kershaw made two appearances, one at home and one in Houston. The left-hander allowed six runs in 4.2 innings away, while throwing four shutout innings at Dodger Stadium.
That series would have marked Kershaw’s first win in the Fall Classic, and he thankfully managed to secure some rings before the end of his career.
