Dave Roberts and the Los Angeles Dodgers are progressing on a contract extension that would likely make him the highest-paid manager in MLB history, at least in terms of average annual value.

While the Chicago Cubs made Craig Counsell the highest-paid manager last offseason — giving him a five-year, $40 million deal — Roberts is expected to reset the market in terms of AAV. The years, however, are a different story.

According to Jack Harris of the LA Times, Roberts and the Dodgers were believed to have been discussing a four-year contract structure earlier this spring.

If the Dodgers were to give Roberts a four-year extension, it would make sense for it be somewhere in the $40 million range, which would give him an average annual value of $10 million per season.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post, who was first to say the two sides were progressing on a contract extension, reported that the deal is expected to be done by Wednesday, when the team travels to Japan for their season-opening Tokyo Series against the Chicago Cubs.

A contract extension for Roberts has been almost a given all offseason long. However, the Dodgers front office made it clear they wanted to complete all the player-related tasks of the offseason before finalizing the Roberts extension.

Roberts has expressed confidence all offseason that a deal would be reached between the two sides.

“Obviously, I love being here,” Roberts said. “I haven’t shied away from that. I’m confident it’s going to get done. Right now, being here, I’m just really focused on these guys and pouring into them and just trying to get better and do something really special for this ’25 club.”

He also discussed what he was looking for in the negotiations.

“I just think it all comes down to value. And I think whatever anyone does, they want their value. That’s kind of where I’m at. I’m hopeful things get done,” Roberts said.

“But it’s not (a goal) to be the highest-paid manager. If that’s the fallout, fine. But that’s not why I do my job. I do my job because I love baseball, I love the Dodgers and I love the players. But I do feel the body of work is pretty dang good.”
