Dodgers Draft Huge Infielder After Long Wait, Land Potential Steal

The Los Angeles Dodgers, after waiting a long time to make their first pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, selected high school shortstop Bo Lowrance with the No. 40 overall selection.

Due to the Dodgers’ signing of Kyle Tucker and Edwin Diaz, they lose their 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th-round picks as both rejected qualifying offers

Additionally, they lost their first-round pick because they were in the second tier of the Competitive Balance Tax.

Coming into the draft, the Dodgers did not need any more outfielders or players who can most likely be DHs, since their farm system is full of them. Instead, pitchers, infielders, and catchers would be ideal for adding depth to their prospect pool.

Thus, Lowrance makes perfect sense for the Dodgers, a very tall shortstop who could end up at third base.

Bo Lowrance Scouting Report

Lowrance measures six feet five inches and weighs 200 pounds as an 18-year-old who turns 19 in September. He bats left-handed and throws right-handed.

The Athletic’s Keith Law has Lowrance ranked No. 16 overall and the fifth-best shortstop. MLB Pipeline has him at No. 21, while FanGraphs has him sitting at No. 7 overall.

Baseball America was the lowest on Lowrance, having him at No. 38 overall.

Here is what Law had to say about the Lowrance:

“Lowrance has been the hottest high school name this spring, as teams are hunting for players in the high school ranks now that the college crop has turned out to be disappointing,” Law wrote in his scouting report.

“He’s a big, strong left-handed hitter with a solid swing for hitting the ball in the air, a little long to the ball because of his height but making up for it with very quick hand acceleration, along with a strong follow-through that lifts the ball for power.

“He raked at showcase events last year, and offers a possible future plus hit tool/plus power combination.

“Scouts seem to agree he has no shot to stick at shortstop, probably going straight to third base in pro ball, with right field maybe his ultimate destination given his size.”

Overall, the Dodgers seemingly got a steal with Lowrance, given how high some of the scouts were on him. The Dodgers will pick next at No. 132 overall.
