Dodgers’ Dustin May To Miss Remainder Of Season After Undergoing Surgery

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Dustin May will miss the rest of the 2024 season after undergoing surgery for an esophageal tear, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The 26-year-old right-hander was set to make a rehabilitation assignment but was recently feeling pain in his throat and stomach during a dinner. He was then diagnosed with the esophageal tear, and will not be able to participate in physical activity for two months.

May has continued to deal with injuries throughout the last four years of his career. He tore his UCL in May of 2021, causing him to miss the majority of the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

In 2023, underwent flexor tendon surgery, which kept him out for much of 2023 and the start of the 2024 season. He has not appeared in any games this season and will have to wait until 2025 for a comeback.

When healthy, May is one of the most promising young starters for the Dodgers. Over his career, he is 12-9 with a 3.10 ERA and 174 strikeouts. His numbers were even better across nine starts in 2023 when May went 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA.

The injury is another blow for the Dodgers, who are riddled with injuries in their rotation. Starters Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are all on the injured list, along with relievers Joe Kelly, Brusdar Graterol, and Ryan Brasier.

  1. Well that’s a bummer. I was hoping to see him back.
Along the same lines, what is happening with Tony Gonsolin?

    1. He’s due to have some silly set back… That is just the way it goes with our jinxed pitching corps…

  2. An esophageal tear? I kind of know what it is, a cousin died of esophageal cancer, hopefully it’s nothing like that. But odd, really odd. **** baseball, I hope the guy is ok, long term.

  3. So will they trade for a starting pitcher? Today it is 1 experienced starter, Paxton, 4 rookies, Gavin Stone (doing fine so far), Landon Knack (so far OK); Wrobelski (too soon to tell if he can pitch 5 innings) and River Ryan (never pitched in the big leagues yet).

Glasnow should be back soon. Yamamoto not until at least August 15 at the earliest. Kershaw maybe in 2 weeks, maybe not. Bobbie Miller, something has happened to the guy who was a rookie of the year type pitcher last year. Michael Grove — no word on him. Kye Hurt — maybe seriously injured, no word on him.

So it seems necessary to trade for 1 or even 2 starters who can start a playoff game.
