Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman to Take Major Step Towards Return

Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman is expected to see action in Cactus League as the first baseman started a running progression, manager Dave Roberts announced Friday.

Originally, Freeman said he would not be participating in early spring training games, but the latest update signifies his recovery is going smoothly.

“I don’t think I will be in the games at the beginning. It looks like I’m going to start a running progression right when I get to spring training,” Freeman said at DogerFest. “As of right now, I am on track to be able to play in Tokyo.”

Once the Dodgers began spring camp, Freeman’s excitement for the 2025 season was evident as he even broke some recovery rules.

“I wasn’t supposed to swing today, but I swung,” Freeman said. “I couldn’t help myself.”

Nonetheless, the World Series hero shared he would be ready for the season opener in Tokyo.

“I am perfectly on track for that,” Freeman said. “We’ll get a better sense when I’m not in an inflated bubble helping me run, but probably middle of next week by the end of the next week I’ll have a really good sense of how I’m feeling.”

The timeline for Freeman’s return was uncertain after undergoing surgery this offseason, but Roberts was never concerned.

“I’m not worried about it,” he said earlier this week.

Freeman’s goal this season is to participate in every game of the regular season. In 2024, he missed time because of a family emergency and injury.

“The goal is 162 (games),” he said. “Hopefully it’s 161 because I always take the game off after we win the division. … I’m doing everything I can to make sure I’m ready for 162.”
