Dodgers Have Several Second Base Options to Evaluate Ahead of 2026 Season

The Los Angeles Dodgers made an addition to their wide selection of middle infielders last week, adding Andy Ibanez.

With Ibañez on a major league deal, the Dodgers have at least one more option to consider at second base for the coming season. As it stands, the Dodgers have Tommy Edman, Hyeseong Kim, Miguel Rojas, Alex Freeland, and Ibanez to choose from at second.

The Dodgers may also have an additional option with utility infielder Ryan Fitzgerald, who was designated for assignment in order to make room for Ibañez on the 40-man roster. If Fitzgerald makes it through waivers, he will remain with the organization.

Tommy Edman

Edman served as the Dodgers’ Opening Day second baseman in 2025, but spent a lot of time on the injured list throughout the season.

His numbers took a dip from his 37-game spell with the Dodgers in 2024, as he batted .225 with a .656 OPS in 2025. Edman played 66 games at second in 2025, but with LA’s need for an outfielder, he may see his time in the infield drop depending on whether or not he has fully recovered from the surgery he received on his ankle in 2025.

Hyeseong Kim

Kim took on a limited role with the Dodgers after being called up to the majors at the beginning of May, but he tore up the competition during his first month in MLB. He batted .422 with a 1.058 OPS in May, but his limited usage led to a drop in production as the season progressed.

If he can find the form he had when the Dodgers called him up, he could realistically carve out a role for the Dodgers in the middle of the infield.

Miguel Rojas

The Dodgers’ World Series Game 7 hero also played a limited role in 2025, but managed more games at second base than anyone else on the team with 68 — most of which came during Edman’s stints on the injured list.

The veteran can feature all around the infield, and will likely come in off the bench to start the season. Should the Dodgers need a reliable player, though, they can look towards Rojas, who has managed an OPS north of .700 in both of the past two years and has a well above average glove.

Alex Freeland

Freeland, who came up as a shortstop in the Dodgers’ system, didn’t feature at the position even once during his month-long stay in the majors in 2025.

The 24-year-old played in 29 games for the Dodgers, and made 15 appearances at second base throughout. He batted .190 in those games, hitting two homes runs and six RBIs on his way to a .602 OPS. With the position up for grabs, if Freeland can impress during spring training, he could find his way onto the Opening Day roster.

Andy Ibañez

Ibañez is the Dodgers’ third major-league signing this offseason, and is sure to provide some relief to an infield which had several depth issues in 2025.

The veteran spent a majority of his time at third base last season, but also logged 11 appearances at second base. He hasn’t ever had much of a bat, posting a .694 OPS across his career, but profiles as an above average glove and could be a huge defensive boost for the Dodgers in 2026.

LA is spoiled for choice ahead of the 2026 season, and their infielders’ performances in spring training could very well decide who they will go with heading into this year.

Ryan Fitzgerald

The 31-year-old Fitzgerald has the least experience of any of the Dodgers’ prospective second baseman heading into 2026, but could very well make an impact on the team should he clear waivers.

The Dodgers designated Fitzgerald for assignment upon officially signing Ibañez on Tuesday.

After spending seven years in the minors, Fitzgerald made his MLB debut for the Minnesota Twins in 2025 and made an immediate impact in a limited amount of time. Through 24 games and 46 at-bats, Fitzgerald managed four home runs and six RBIs while slashing .196/.302/.457 for a .759 OPS.

If Fitzgerald remains with the Dodgers and pull his average up, he could play a big role for the Dodgers infield in the upcoming season.

  1. Edman and Kim will get most of the 2B at bats. Rojas is there for relief. Call and Ibanez are there for split squad spring games and will be gone by opening day
