Dodgers News: Kiké Hernandez Underwent Surgery in October
Another day and another Dodgers player who seemingly played through the postseason injured. This time it was revealed that utilityman Kiké Hernandez underwent surgery to repair a double hernia toward the end of October. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal reported the news of the procedure.
The procedure shouldn’t keep him away from baseball activities for long, and he should fully recover well before the majority of offseason action starts. Hernandez is scheduled to be a free agent this winter, but there is interest in him returning to the Dodgers once again.
He was traded back to Los Angeles at the trade deadline, and he looked like a completely different player. Hernandez struggled in the first half of the season with the Boston Red Sox but seemed to find his footing with LA after being traded.
After returning to the Dodgers, Hernadez hit .262 with 30 runs batted in over 54 games. He also was one of the few players that showed up in the postseason before the team was eliminated.
Depending on how long he was dealing with the hernia injury throughout the season, it could have affected his performance and production throughout the season. But it seems that he wanted to get it fixed, so it didn’t affect things next year.
While it’s nice to hear that the procedure wasn’t too invasive, this is another Dodgers player who had to have surgery after the season ended despite what we heard from the front office. President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman said earlier in the offseason that he didn’t expect any players to need surgery this winter.
Either way, we hope for a great recovery for Hernandez and hopefully, he returns to the team next season. He brings energy and clutch hitting to this team, two aspects of a player that any team would love to have in the clubhouse.
