Dodgers News: Miguel Rojas Needs Surgery, Still Wants to Play in World Series

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Miguel Rojas will have to undergo surgery for a sports hernia following the end of the 2024 MLB postseason. Rojas was left off the Dodgers’ roster for the National League Championship Series, but would still want to play through his injury if the Dodgers do advance to the World Series, via Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

Rojas played in the Dodgers’ first three games of the NL Division Series against the San Diego Padres, but has not appeared in a postseason game since. During eight at-bats through the 2024 postseason, Rojas recorded two hits.

Rojas has not played in a World Series before in his career, and understandably wants to have a chance to try and help the Dodgers win another championship. Rojas has played in the postseason just four times before, but has yet to play in an NLCS or World Series game.

What could hurt Rojas’ chances of playing in the World Series is how effective Tommy Edman has played in his place since Rojas left because of his injury. Edman, who the Dodgers acquired at the trade deadline, has had a phenomenal postseason campaign thus far. Over 10 games, Edman has hit .333 with 13 hits, four runs, eight RBIs, and three stolen bases.

During the Dodgers’ latest series against the New York Mets, Edman has been even more prolific, posting seven hits, three runs, and seven RBIs.

Rojas, 35, likely only has a few more seasons at most before he retires, meaning this could be his final chance to appear in a World Series as a player if the Dodgers do advance. Rojas told Dodgers Nation in July that he hopes to retire as a Dodger, and join the team’s coaching staff.

Over the regular season, Rojas appeared in 103 games for the Dodgers — taking a larger role with the team after Mookie Betts fractured his hand and moved to the outfield when he returned from injury. Rojas hit .283 with 87 hits, 41 runs, six home runs, and 36 RBIs.
