Dodgers Prospects: James Outman’s Tools Make Him a ‘Potential Star’

James Outman is expected to make heavy contributions to Los Angeles this upcoming season.  Keith Law of The Athletic took it a step further and called the prospect a “potential star”.

The insider ranked Outman at number 89 on the Athletic’s Top 100 prospects list:

“Outman has made some real swing changes since the Dodgers took him off an unremarkable couple of years at Sacramento State, and he’s performed better and better even as they’ve moved him up aggressively due to his age. He’s one of the best athletes in their entire system who might have four pluses on the scouting report, definitely a plus run, plus arm, plus power guy who might be a plus defender in center as well.”

Although the left-handed hitting center-fielder has a range of skills, the biggest concern Law addressed was Outman’s high swing-and-miss rate.

“There’s too much swing and miss in the zone here to say he’ll be more than an average hitter, but with his other tools, that makes him a potential star, especially if he can do more against lefties than just hit for power. He’s older than any hitter on this list, but doesn’t have as much baseball experience as the typical 25-year-old. Don’t be surprised if he ends up the Dodgers’ primary center fielder this year.”

Last year, Outman made his MLB debut with Los Angeles where he appeared in four games, going 6-for-13 with two doubles and a home run. To Law’s point, all seven non-hits were strikeouts.

Though his spot on the roster is not a given, the 25-year-old has what it takes to improve LA’s outfield. During his stint with the Dodgers, Outman displayed his defensive ability to cover on both left and right field.

As long as Outman works on his bat-to-bat skills, he has the potential to live up to the hype and make a valuable impact on the team with the tools he has.
