Dodgers Recall Right-Hander at Veteran Reliever’s Expense

The Los Angeles Dodgers made a roster move ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Athletics, recalling right-hander Wyatt Mills from Triple-A.

In a corresponding move, they designated right-hander Jonathan Hernandez for assignment.

Mills came up to be with the team earlier in the season, last appearing for them against the Los Angeles Angels in mid-May. He appeared in a total of four games for the Dodgers, and allowed three runs in 3.1 innings for an 8.10 OPS.

The Dodgers likely recalled Mills due to Hernandez’s recent underperformance, as well as the fact that they fill a similar role and Hernandez pitched in the Dodgers’ win on Monday. Bringing Mills up gives the Dodgers more options in their bullpen, especially for low-leverage situations.

Mills arrived with the Dodgers in the offseason on a minor league deal, and while he hasn’t been a world-beater in the big leagues, he has been extremely impressive in the minors. Through 26 appearances in a hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, Mills has a 2.64 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched.

The right-hander’s next opportunity to make a difference for the Dodgers will come against the Athletics in the second game of LA’s three-game series against the AL West squad, which will begin Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. PT.

Why Did Jonathan Hernández Get DFA’d?

Hernandez pitched in the first game of the Dodgers’ series against the Athletics on Monday, hurling 1.1 innings and striking out one batter while allowing the final run of the game to cross in the ninth. The 29-year-old right-hander made 12 appearances this season, posting an 8.15 ERA through 17.2 innings pitched.

He had a solid record after his first four appearances for the team, posting a 1.50 ERA, but things quickly fell apart for him in June. He allowed six runs against the Los Angeles Angels June 7, then allowed four runs in back-to-back appearances against the Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres.

Now on waivers, Hernandez will look to join a new team and prove himself as an MLB-caliber reliever elsewhere in the league.
